People who are overweight are putting themselves in danger they are significantly more likely to develop diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, hypertension and even have a stroke. There are many people who want, and are willing to get fit, but maybe lack some of the motivation or tips to do so.

Below are a few tips on how you can healthily shed any extra weight and get fit in 2020.

Take a bold step to move.

Exercise is one of the most effective weight loss strategies. Unfortunately, we know that a lot of you struggle to know exactly how much or what kind of workouts you should be doing. Exercise is such a complex topic that anyone who is concerned about losing weight should do some work on the types of activities that might be part of their weight loss program. If you need a little nudge in the right direction - we offer a 4-week online fitness coaching programme to guide you along the way. Sign up here.

Any moving is good.

Once you’ve started moving, all the small things you do at home, like gardening, hoovering, swimming or tag-playing with children can be classified as exercise. They might not be a high intensity workout, but there the you move, the better.

You are what you eat - so eat well!

A lot can be done to change what you consume, but controlling it properly requires, willpower and knowledge. We’re not suggesting that you become a nutritionist, but taking the time to understand what macronutrients you need is key. At our boot camps, our partner nutritionist teaches you how to calculate this - she is also available if you want a private Skype session.

Knowing what is healthy or not need not involve all sorts of convoluted decision-making, charts and lists, you simply need to identity good carbs, bad carbs, high glycemic index foods and low glycemic index foods. If you're able to learn all that fantastic, but you're using common sense in the meantime. Eat a lot of vegetables and fruit, have some fat, but not a ton, and keep away from sugar as much as possible. Basically read the food labels and eat small nutritious meals every day!

A problem shared is a problem halved. Team up.

Partner up with a friend who has the same goals as you do. Take a walk with them every single day. Join a fitness class together. Meet them for lunch and encourage each other to each healthily. They're not going to make faces when you order something for your health rather than the fun of it. When you fancy taking your fitness to the next level - we have twin rooms at all of our boot camps in Scotland and Spain. :)

Drink more water.

Many times we interpret the signals of the body as hunger when they are actually thirst. Sometimes, a glass of water will relieve the hunger pangs that we feel. Keeping the body properly hydrated also helps flush toxins from your body and helps improve liver function. Make it a re-usable bottle to save the environment if you can!!.

Track your progress

Many people have Fitbits or use myfitnesspal to track their activity and food intake. Make sure that you are honest with it - only inputting your weight when its a ‘good day’ is not helping anyone. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that you exercise just the right amount to meet your fitness goals!

As you start any new fitness regime, it is common to gain weight at first but don't let that discourage you. Muscle weighs more than fat. It's completely normal and can even be considered part of the body's training to lose weight and lead a healthier life!

Be happy with the results. When you behave healthily, you'll lose weight.
